2014 — 3 January: Friday

Busy, busy.1 Actually, I'm just back from a dash to Waitrose before even having had my initial wake-me-up cuppa, let alone breakfast. But when you stop to consider the parlous state of my little pre-Xmas vegetable store:

... coupled with my last-minute decision to make my first crockpot of the new year, I really had no choice, did I? I mean, I know a chef works with whatever he can get his hands on, but that would be a ridiculous philosophy to follow here in Technology Towers.

It's been two days...

... since I last read an article on AI. Must be time for the next one. Source and snippet:

Among publicly available systems, the best is probably a Stanford project, called Deeply Moving, that applies deep learning to the task of understanding movie reviews. The cool part is that you can try it for yourself, cutting and pasting text from a movie review and immediately seeing the program's analysis; you even teach it to improve. The less cool thing is that the deep-learning system doesn't really understand anything...
the first thing I tested was a Rotten Tomatoes excerpt of a review of the last movie I saw, "American Hustle": "A sloppy, miscast, hammed up, overlong, overloud story that still sends you out of the theater on a cloud of rapture." The deep-learning system couldn't tell me that the review was ironic, or that the reviewer thought the whole was more than the sum of the parts. It told me only, inaccurately, that the review was very negative.

The piece as a whole is as deeply sceptical as I am myself.

I have a tendency...

... not to hurry things. Example? My return from the tip today almost completes the culling and chucking-out process I was first engaged upon back when I still had Christa to drive me to the Asda recycling bins (and supervise my first two 5-minute bursts of driving since I was 17) in the car that I subsequently gave to Peter. And that was some years ago, now.

The cloudless sky of my earlier expotition has now (11:23) become a full cloud cover promising much rain not too long from now. I think my next outing will be my recently-scheduled mid-afternoon call at the Roger & Eileen tea and biccy emporium.

Is it time...

... for my next toy yet? After all, I've been very good! (And my last Oppo was simply ages ago.)

That perishing...

... Katie Puckrik (who is currently sitting in for John Peel's son Tom Ravenscroft) has just cost me two dollops of my widower's mite. A Phil Manzanera album ("Diamond Head") that had somehow completely passed me by until now, and a Dory Previn album ("The Art of Dory Previn") purely to get hold of the gorgeous track "The lady with the braid" which has also unaccountably been AWOL from my audio life.
